As you would
probably agree with me, good news have a tendency to vanish in to oblivion much
faster than bad news. It is therefore only prudent to briefly speak about the
recent presidential awards to outstanding Kenyan leaders. As you may well know,
the highest of presidential awards conferred to select individuals among the
high and mighty in the country is the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya. The coveted
awards are normally given in recognition of exceptional service to the nation
by the recipients. Senior most in this Order is the Chief of the Order of the
Golden Heart of Kenya
(C.G.H), which belongs to the president.
The Elder of
the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (E.G.H) comes next with recipients being
the Deputy President, Speakers of Parliament, Cabinet Secretaries, the First
Lady, the wife of the Deputy President, Head of Public Service and the Kenya Defense
Forces' (KDF) Chief of Staff among others. In 2018, the recipients included a
number of County Governors of which Embu County Governor Hon. Martin Wambora
was one. Other governors among the eleven recipients of the award were Chairman
of the Council of Governors and Turkana governor Hon. Josphat Nanok, Hon. Anne
Waiguru of Kirinyaga County, Hon. Hassan Joho of Mombasa, Hon. Jackson Mandago
of Uasin Gishu, Hon. Dr. Alfred Mutua of Machakos, Hon. Joyce Laboso of Bomet
and Hon. Cornel Rasanga of Siaya County.

As per the
National Honours Act, those who merit the decoration include persons who have
exhibited exemplary qualities, or achievements of heroism, patriotism or
leadership and those who have made exemplary contributions to the
country in the fields of economics, science, academics, sports,
journalism, business and security among others. In an article authored by
President Uhuru Kenyatta himself and published in the digital Daily Nation on
12th December 2018, the head of state expressed his honor for the
recipients in these honorable words:
“In
recognition of distinguished and outstanding services rendered to the nation in
various capacities and responsibilities, I, Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, President of
the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defense Forces,
confer awards and honors to the following persons”, and went ahead to name
them.
So what does
this mean to the people whose leaders were honored? That they are indeed
blessed to have such people at the helm of their societies. Since it is not
every day that one gets publicly recognized by the president, these awards will
go a long way in forming these leaders’ legacy. Isn’t that good news in deed?!
Well, so
many others were honored with various awards, of which will be discussed in
details in the sequel to this article.
