Embu County Government, KFS trains Guides, Porters to promote Mt Kenya East Tourism Circuit

The County Government of Embu has partnered with the Kenya Forest Service to train tour guides and porters as a way of enhancing tourism in the Mt Kenya East Circuit. 

The twenty youth trained by the county's department of Trade, Tourism, Investment and Industrialization will be acting as guides for domestic and foreign tourists to Mt. Kenya via Embu County. 

The initiative comes after the Embu County government set aside funds to open up a route to the mountain through Embu, Mt. Kenya South Eastern Irangi route. 

The youth will be hired by the county government and other tour companies to market Embu tourist attraction sites and other scenic points along the Mt. Kenya circuit. 

County Executive Committee Member for Trade, Tourism, Investment and Industrialization Dr. Jamleck Muturi called on the youth to be in the forefront of marketing the tourist attraction sites available in the region.

"The main peaks, Lenana and Batian are more visible from this new route and so you will be engaged positively,” Muturi told the youth. 

The CEC said that the youth will also sensitize local communities on how to showcase cultural and Agricultural tourism. 

 "The youth will be mostly based at the entrance of Irangi forest where they will be picking up tourists to help them find their way up the mountain as guides and porters," said the county minister. 

Further, he said that the world was focusing on community-based tourism because of its high sustainability. 

Muturi urged area residents to take advantage and entrench tourism as a source of livelihood.

“Tourists visiting the area will in addition to mountain climbing be able to engage in sport fishing, nature walks and bird watching as well as visiting Mau Mau caves,” he said.

Mt. Kenya deputy park warden, George Ombuki encouraged the youth to take the knowledge earned as a business opportunity to grow themselves.

Ombuki, who is also the mountain search officer at the Mt. Kenya National Park said the youth will also be trained on wilderness first aid skills. 

"This is because they will be the first line of defense with tourist and hence these skills are important for the safety of guests," said Ombuki.

His visit to Capitol Hill with his counterparts a day before the onset of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) function through Embu County to Chuka town in Tharaka Nithi County to Meru cements the governor's support.

The priory much embattled but now heroic leader had already made his stand clear while addressing the crowd during the 56th Jamhuri Day celebrations at Runyenjes in Embu County on 12/12/2019. 

Using an anecdote to express his reverence for the President, Governor Wambora said, "An elder sitting under a tree sees further than a lad atop the same tree"

While expounding on the statement, he said that if the President in his wisdom decided to make peace with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga through the Handshake, hence BBI, he (Wambora) is in the forefront to support the same.

It did not escape the public ear to note that in spite of the President's youthful age in comparison to that of the Governor, the latter considered the former an elder. It was a clear indication of the high esteem in which the Governor holds the president.

Embu County set to host Communications Authority for 'Kikao Kikuu' Forum

EMBU: Communications Authority of Kenya's Kikao Kikuu to be held in Embu. 

Areas in Embu that have been facing mobile network challenges are set to get a communication uplift as way of connecting them to the world. 

This comes after Embu County government partnered with the Communication Authority of Kenya to provide mobile network to areas that have been experiencing network issues in the past. 

The authority, together with the Embu County Government, will from 25th to 28th November hold a County ICT Consumer Forum at the University of Embu. 

Through the forum, dubbed 'Kikao Kikuu', the Authority is set to provide platforms of interaction with ICT consumers and service providers among other stakeholders to explore solutions to challenges in communications with the devolved units.

Embu will be the 19th county to host the forum as C.A targets to traverse the 47 counties in Kenya.

The forum’s theme is ‘Using ICT as an enabler of opportunities’.

The regulator whose mandate is to facilitate development of the information and communications sectors including; broadcasting, cybersecurity, multimedia, telecommunications, electronic commerce, postal and courier services, uses Kikao Kikuu forums to create a sustainable link that promotes value in the way consumers interact with systems and processes.

In addition, it helps to bridge the gaps between the policy and legal framework by deepening the awareness and building individual capacity.

CA is charged with safeguarding the interests of consumers of ICT services. This is achieved through the enforcement of consumer regulations as well as educating users of these services on their rights and responsibilities.

In the past, it has carried out consumer education outreach program targeting users of mobile and internet services (“Chukua Hatua: Pata Huduma ya Mawasiliano Unayostahili”), Postal Courier Consumers (Kaa Macho), SIM Card Registration (Pata Ukweli wa Mtambo), Number Portability (Namba Yangu Milele) and Child Online Protection.

According to Kenya’s Digital Economy Blueprint, digital skills are a prerequisite for benefiting from any technology, across all sectors of the economy, and at all levels of the skills spectrum. 

“Digital skills will enable every Kenyan to have access to digital technology, having the literacy and know-how to use this technology, and being able to participate in and create with this technology,” reads part of the digital skills pillar that is focused on developing digital skills for its citizens [Mostly ICT professionals] to meet the competencies and expertise required for the digital economy.

Embu County forges ahead in the war against cancer

Health experts have raised concerns that Embu men do not seek medical attention from hospitals leading to late diagnosis of diseases.

Runyenjes Level 4 Hospital Medical Superintendent, Dr. Samson Iliwa said that Embu men are generally wary of hospitals and contemptuous of health checkups.

While speaking at the health facility over the weekend during a free cancer screening exercise, Iliwa said that a high number of people seeking regular medical checkup were women.

More than 3,000 residents were screened during the exercise that was organized by the county government and Indian doctors. Cuban doctors and a number of local healthcare service providers aided in the free medical camp.

Speaking at the venue, Embu County Executive Committee member (CEC) for Health Dr. Joan Mwende said that men need to be sensitized on the importance of taking regular health checkups.

"The problem with our men is that they wait till they become very ill to go to hospital", she said.

Dr. Mwende added that this was the third of such medical camps held in Embu in so few weeks.

The first one, hosted by The Beth Mugo Cancer Foundation was held at Embu Teaching and Referral Hospital (ETRH) on 31 October 2019.

The function, in which Senator Beth Mugo attended in person and received by Embu Governor H.E Martin Wambora, Embu Senator Hon. Njeru Ndwiga together with several other high profile dignitaries saw to the screening of 421 people.

According to the Health CEC, all those found to be afflicted with cancer are sent to the recently established Oncology Unit at ETRH for palliative care and treatment.

"One of the major challenges we are facing is the unavailability of resident Oncologists and Radiologists at our Cancer Center", says Dr. Mwende.

She alluded that recruitment of more specialists would make it possible for patients to receive daily services at the Oncology Unit as compared to the current once per week clinic.

The Cancer Center is fitted with State-of-the-art equipment and a 120 bed capacity inpatient ward.

EMBU: Sh80 Million Grants for NARIGP Project

600 farmer groups in Embu are set to benefit from a Sh80 million National Agricultural and Rural Inclusive Growth Project. 

The project lies under the Embu County government's ministry of agriculture. 

County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Anne Nyaga said that the project will benefit farmer groups in 20 wards across the county. 

While addressing the media, Nyaga revealed that more than 50 percent of the targeted groups had already applied for the Agricultural grant.

“Already 340 groups have done proposals and have been trained on conservation agriculture," she said as she encouraged more groups to apply.

The agriculture minister said that the project encourages and sensitizes youth to take up agribusiness. 

Further, speaking in the same event, County Executive Committee Member for Water, Richard Mbogo called on residents to find ways of harvesting rain water for Agricultural use. 

“There cannot be agriculture without water, the government has constructed water pans so that we can be able to harvest rain water for irrigation and other domestic use," said Mbogo.

NARIGP is a World Bank-funded program that has been rolled out in 20 other counties in the country. 

The Project Development Objective is to increase agriculture productivity and profitability in the region as a way of averting future cases of drought and hunger. 

Earlier this year Governor Martin Wambora launched a Youth in Agribusiness Strategy through the county's ministry of agriculture. 

Speaking during the launch that happened in February 2019, agriculture CEC Anne Nyaga said that the strategy focused on four value chains. 

"The four value chains are dairy cows, indigenous chicken, green grams and mangoes," she said.

In His tireless efforts to improve infrastructure and leave a legacy, today Governor Martin Wambora led a team of county government officials and area elected MCA’s in a ground survey tour of Kagaari North and Kyeni North ward.

In Kagaari North, a feeder road connecting Muthege area to Kirimiri coffee factory has been earmarked for tarmacking, Muthege area sits along Runyenjes Mukuuri road.

In Kyeni North ward, a feeder road connecting Mufu tea buying Centre, off Runyenjes Meru highway, to Kaithege tea buying Centre has also been mapped for tarmacking.

MCA’s Patrick Rugendo of Kagaari North said that Muthege-Kirimiri coffee factory feeder road comes as great relief for Muthege coffee farmers who have been using a longer route while delivering their berry to the factory.

Kyeni North’s Patrick Mukavi said that Mufu-Kaithege stretch has been a thorn in the flesh of the area residents especially during the rainy season and when tarmacked it will open so many business opportunities.

Governor Wambora further said that the road stretches through more than 20 private and public institutions.

Riders and Motorists said the newly upgraded road has come a long way in easing their daily activities and maximized their profits as they are no longer forced to incur regular repair costs mainly caused by poor roads.

Further, road users and residents living around the upgraded stretch said the project has opened up businesses and other new developments along the area.

Embu hosts Regional Vocational Training Centers’ Games

EASTERN, EMBU: Embu hosts Regional Vocational Training Centers’ Games.

mbu County has for the second time hosted the Eastern Region Inter vocational Training Centers Ballgame competitions.

The two day games that kicked off on Wednesday 16 pools together participants from seven counties participating in three disciplines including football, handball and netball.

While addressing participants during the launch at Kigari Teachers Training College ground, Embu county Executive Committee Member for Education John Kiamati said that all the games will be played at the college grounds which is the most conducive in the region.

Embu, Marsabit, Kitui, Meru, Machakos, Tharaka Nithi and Isiolo counties are being represented by teams drawn from different vocational training centers in their respective counties.

‘’We are gathered here as vocational training centers for ball games, all the other counties are being hosted here for two days, we will be here for two days,‘’ said Kiamati.

The CEC said that the games are set to bring together technical students from different counties to give them a chance to showcase and grow their talents.

Kiamati said that those who will qualify will proceed to Nairobi for national competitions.

‘’Talent is now an economic activity, we want them to showcase their talents so that we can nurture them for their own self growth,’’ he said.

Further the County Executive member said that Embu was ready to host the event and had enough facilities adding that local business people had seized the opportunity and improved the hospitality services.

Five years have seen to the tremendous growth of Vocational Training Centres. For instance, Marsabit County had 3 VTCs but today there are 6 centers with 700 students in comparison to less than 200 before. Taking such sporting events seriously plays a major role in portraying a better public perception towards VTCs.

Speaking at the venue, the CECM for Education, Youth Empowerment and Sports in Marsabit County, Mr. Mulle Godana said that the occasion provides an opportunity for counties to benchmark with others hence uplift economic performance across the region.

“Before the onset of devolution, there had been no opportunity for such events as this to take place. Such events serve to bring the youth together in recognition of their capabilities, now made possible by the availability of necessary resources” He said.

Mr. Godana urged the Council of Governors to ensure the continuity of the annual competitions to serve as motivation to attract more people to enroll in the institutions.

“Such sporting events enable the people to see the other side of VTCs. There have been cases whereby one joins a VTC thinking of himself as only an electrician, for example, only to realize that he was also a footballer. Such discoveries are made through such events as this” Mr Godana added.

 

50,000 Acres set to be Reforested in Embu

mbu County Government has partnered with the Kenya Forest Service to plant over 5 million indigenous trees in Kiang'ombe and Kianjiru forests.

The reforestation partnership will cover 50,000 acres. Tree planting will commence with the onset of the short rains.  

Embu County Executive Committee member for Lands, Urban Planning. Environment, Housing and Natural Resources Mr. Josphat Kithumbu said that different partners had agreed to restore the forests which had been depleted by charcoal burners and loggers. 

"We appreciate the support from Kenya Forest Service and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)  in reforestation program through a participatory management plan," he said. 

Kithumbu said the purpose of the exercise was to contribute to the 10 per cent forest cover targeted by the national government by 2022. 

"It will also provide a livelihood for the local community who will be establishing beehives in the two forests," he said. 

Deputy Chief Forest Conservator, Charity Munyasia said that KFS will give technical advice on forest conservation. 

She said KFS will provide the 5 million tree seedlings and ensure they are planted in the two forests by the end of the year.

However, Munyasia noted that the two forests have not been encroached on and therefore there will be no evictions there. 

"Initially, there was human activity in the forests but after talks with the community, they stopped. We have no people living in the forests now," she said. 

Community forest association chairman Njiru Ndugire said the residents are determined to guard the natural resources. 

"We have been allowed to keep beehives in the forest after planting the trees. This is beneficial and we will protect the two forest like our lands," Ndugire said.

THE Kenya National Chambers of Commerce and industry, Embu County Chapter, in conjunction with the County government of Embu through its Department of Trade, Tourism, Investment and Industrialization is expected to host the Kenya National Chambers of Commerce and Industry president Mr. Richard Ngatia, for a second time in so few months. The event, dubbed as Embu Business Partnership and Networking Dinner will focus on several issues discussed on 31 May 2019 when the president had visited the county. For the purpose of this dinner,Mr Ngatia will be the Chief Guest.

As such, 23 August 2019 is supposed to be a day that would mark the recognition of the great strides made by the business community in Embu County and the region at large in the last several months. The occasion, aimed to serve as a follow-up on a number of development-centered ideas shared during the president’s last visit to Embu would bear sweeter fruits if it was all inclusive. These sentments were expressed by members of Lower Embu Business Community, comprising of the younger generation in business. They feel that Chambers is for the older established business tycoons.

However, speaking about the PPP dinner, Embu Chapter Chambers Chairman, Mr John Mugo Mate said, “Strengthening the Public-Private business Partnership and networking, is the theme of this very special occasion”

Embu County Governor H.E Martin Wambora is expected to be the Guest of Honour for the occasion. During the last visit to Embu by the Chamber president, the business community leader pledged more engagement with all county governments in support of the cottage industry, commonly known as the Juakali sector. His main concern on that particular event was to establish what really affects business in Embu County and come up with solutions.

Following his departure, public communication officers in Embu County embarked on finding out the problems affecting the business community in the region, with the aim of coming up with solutions that should be presented during the Business Connect Dinner at Izaak Walton hotel on 23 August 2019, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

The officers, having carried out the research with all due diligence are set to present their findings to the Governor, the Chambers president, the Chairman and all stakeholders invited to the occasion, for the benefit of all and sundry. In the report, the officers can be expected to explain the incongruity inherent in the president’s proposal to have a motorcycle assembly plant and an industrial park in the county, among his other noble ideas.

Kenya National Chambers of Commerce and Industry Set to Support the Cottage Industry

The cottage industry - commonly known as Juakali - is bound to receive some much needed support from the Kenya national Chambers of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI). Speaking in Embu when he and his team paid a courtesy call to the governor on 31 May 2019, KNCCI president Mr. Richard Ngatia pledged more involvement by the organization in the affairs of the business community both at county and national level.

“The chamber is looking forward to engagement with county governments and more involvement of the Chamber in the success of national holidays such as Madaraka Day.”

Announcing that he has recently been named as the deputy Patron of the Juakali sector countrywide, Mr. Ngatia said his team is out to understand what affects Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in counties. As such he plans to go round all the counties to determine solutions to challenges that the business community faces and see how to advise the government on the same.
