WATER, ENVIRONMENT, CLIMATE CHANGE AND NATURAL RESOURCES

Governor Mbarire Commits Additional Ksh. 4 Million to Strengthen Water Infrastructure in Gaturi South

Governor Cecily Mbarire has reaffirmed her administration’s dedication to agricultural resilience by allocating an additional Ksh. 4 million to the Gatene Irrigation Project in Gaturi South Ward. In a statement, the Governor noted that relying on rain-fed agriculture was becoming “as unpredictable as a chameleon on a rainbow,” given the escalating effects of climate change and a rapidly growing population.

"The demand for food is increasing, and we can’t sit around hoping the rain will read our minds,” Governor Mbarire stated, emphasizing the urgency of sustainable water solutions. She explained that the latest funding brings the county’s total support to Ksh. 7 million, a crucial step toward meeting the 10% county contribution required to unlock national government funding for the project.

According to the Governor, this investment will directly benefit over 400 households, boosting agricultural productivity and economic stability in the region. “Our goal is to ensure that farmers have the tools they need to thrive—because, let’s face it, food security isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a necessity,” she quipped.

Governor Mbarire further assured farmers that her administration remains committed to introducing innovative agricultural techniques, reinforcing food security, and ensuring long-term sustainability. “We’re in this for the long haul, and with the right strategies in place, we’ll keep farming viable—come rain or shine,” she concluded.
